About this site
This is a small set of free calculators for people buying landscaping and building materials in the United States: gravel, topsoil, mulch and concrete. You enter the size of the job, and it tells you how many cubic yards, tons or bags to buy.
The site is run by AUSSIE-AI LTD, a small company based in the UK. There is no big team behind it, and we do not claim to be landscapers, engineers or builders. The calculators are a tool for turning measurements into quantities, and the explanations are written from published sources, which are listed at the bottom of each page.
How the numbers are produced
The volume maths is plain arithmetic: area times depth, converted to cubic yards. That part has no uncertainty if your measurements are right.
The weights are less exact. A cubic yard of gravel or topsoil does not have one weight, because stone type, size and moisture all change it. We use ranges taken from supplier pages and say when sources disagree. Where a number comes from a manufacturer, such as the bag yields for pre-mixed concrete, we use the manufacturer's data sheet. Where the depth advice comes from university extension services, such as for mulch and raised beds, we cite them. Where only suppliers publish a figure, we say so on the page.
When we couldn't verify something, we left it out or flagged it. If you find a figure that looks wrong, please tell us and we will check it against its source.
What these calculators can't do
- They cannot see your ground. Soft soil, slopes and drainage can all raise the amount you need.
- They give estimates. Order a small buffer, and ask your supplier for the weight per yard of their own product.
- They are not engineering advice. For structural slabs, retaining walls, large driveways or anything near a building, follow local codes and consult a professional.
- Prices are not included, because they vary by area and change often.
